For the duration of the festival, we will be bringing in a special Steinway D grand piano from the Klangmanufaktur Hamburg.
Grand Piano Profile KM021
Steinway D No. 134,935 KM021 was built in 1907 at the Steinway factory in Hamburg and remained in Steinway’s concert service until 1925. At some point, the grand piano found its way to England, where it was used for several decades in a concert hall. In 2018, Klangmanufaktur acquired the instrument in a nearly unplayable and heavily worn condition and carried out a complete restoration.
The entire action — including mechanics, keys, dampers, and sustain system — was replaced, giving the instrument the touch and playability of a modern Steinway. The soundboard, however, remains original and effortlessly reproduces the full tonal spectrum expected of a concert instrument: all registers are balanced, the response is quick and precise, and the range of dynamics and tone colors is extensive.
Because the surface was severely damaged, the old finish was completely removed. The piano was then stained black and sealed with oil and wax. The long lifespan of such instruments — and the ability to revive a grand piano over 100 years old to this standard — make them a model for sustainable product life cycles and resource conservation.
KM021 was sold to a private investor and has since served as Klangmanufaktur’s ambassador piano, featured in concerts, festivals, and recording sessions.
