Chinese composer Xiaoyong Chen (*1955) is regarded as one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary music with a truly international reach. After studying composition in Beijing and in Hamburg under György Ligeti, he developed a unique musical language that bridges Western and Chinese traditions. His works are performed worldwide by renowned orchestras and at leading festivals such as the Donaueschingen Festival, the Holland Festival, and the Warsaw Autumn.
Since 1994, Chen has maintained a close artistic partnership with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Until 2023, he was Professor of Composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and now holds a chair at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China. His works are published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes-Sikorski. Chen’s music explores the emergence of sound as an open, evolving process — always in dialogue with the perception of tone itself.
Experience the diversity of his creative work in three world premieres at Schloss Agathenburg and immerse yourself in a sound world that connects Western avant-garde with Eastern sensitivity.
