Alexandra Sostmann

A "crystal-clear touch, almost sober, thoughtful and transparent, free of pathos but full of poetry" - this is how Bayerischer Rundfunk describes the piano playing of pianist Alexandra Sostmann. The unusual stylistic range of her music, from William Byrd to Johann Sebastian Bach and modern music, has also been received with great enthusiasm from critics and audiences alike.

Her close collaboration with contemporary composers is a focal point of her pianistic work. These include the jazz pianist and composer Markus Horn, the German composer Klaus Hinrich Stahmer and the internationally renowned Chinese composer Xiaoyong Chen, who wrote the piano piece "Diary XI" for her. Her next solo album in co-operation with Bayerischer Rundfunk will feature commissioned works by Rouzbeh Rafie and Apollonio Maiello.

Her four solo albums, which have been unanimously praised by critics, prove that she can switch effortlessly from one era to another, and not just on the world's major concert stages. Several albums have also been nominated for both the German Record Critics' Award and the Opus Klassik.

For over 10 years, the artist was part of the internationally successful, award-winning "Duo Villarceaux" and dedicated herself to music for two pianos and four hands. In addition to radio and television recordings, she has released several CDs. After a longer artistic break, the Duo Villarceaux has been performing in concerts again since 2021.

Alexandra Sostmann studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Prof. Volker Banfield and the renowned Bach interpreter Prof. Evgeni Koroliov as well as at the Royal College of Music in London with Dr Peter Katin, where she completed her studies with a concert exam. Semesters abroad at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris rounded off her artistic training. She has been a member of the exclusive circle of Steinway Artists for many years.

Alexandra Sostmann has made a name for herself as a soloist and chamber musician on renowned German stages and international concert platforms. Alexandra Sostmann also regularly tours South America, where she also gives masterclasses. In Argentina and Colombia, she has performed in well-known theatres such as the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Teatro del Libertador in Cordoba and the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in Bogotà. The city where Astor Piazzolla was born, Mar del Plata, awarded her the title of Guest of Honour.
