In addition to her diverse repertoire and regular performances in recitals and with renowned orchestras across Europe, America, and Asia, she has established herself as one of the foremost interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach through her award-winning recordings and performances. In 2020, she received the Bach Medal from the city of Leipzig, a significant honor as it was awarded to a woman for the first time in its 17-year history.
Born into a musical family, Angela Hewitt began her piano studies at the age of three, and by four, she was already performing publicly, winning her first scholarship a year later. She studied under Jean-Paul Sévilla at the University of Ottawa and won the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition in 1985, which marked the beginning of her successful career as a pianist. In 2018, she received the Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award, having already been honored in 2015 with the highest distinction in her home country: she was named Companion of the Order of Canada, an honor bestowed upon only 165 living Canadians at a time. In 2006, she was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II. Angela Hewitt is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, holds seven honorary doctorates, and is a Visiting Fellow at Peterhouse College in Cambridge.
