“The Art of Fugue – An Unfinished Masterpiece”

Panel Discussion:

The Mystery of the Unfinished Fugue

Why did Johann Sebastian Bach leave The Art of Fugue incomplete?

We cordially invite you to a fascinating panel discussion exploring one of the great enigmas of music history: Why did Johann Sebastian Bach leave his work The Art of Fugue unfinished?

The discussion brings together distinguished voices from music and scholarship:

  • Dr. Meinolf Brüser, jurist and musicologist
  • Prof. Grigory Gruzman, pianist
  • Dr. Jörg Hansen, Director of the Bachhaus Eisenach
  • Prof. Dr. Michael Maul, musicologist and Artistic Director of the Leipzig Bach Festival
  • Moderation: Dr. John F. Jungclaussen, journalist and historian

Dr. Brüser proposes that Bach’s final, unfinished fugue might conceal a deliberate secret. Was it intended as a musical farewell, or are the supposed structural and numerical codes mere interpretations by later generations?

These questions, which have intrigued musicians and scholars for centuries, form the basis of an engaging conversation. Together with the audience, the panel will shed new light on Bach’s last masterpiece – and on the man behind the music.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon of insight, lively discussion, and discovery.
