The Bach scholar and artistic director of the Leipzig Bach Festival presents his new book — a well-founded yet accessible “guide to understanding and enjoying the music of the famous Thomaskantor.”
Join us for a reading that will inspire you to rediscover the works of Johann Sebastian Bach with fresh curiosity and joy.
Bach scholar and Artistic Director of the Bachfest Leipzig, Michael Maul, presents in his new book a well-founded yet accessible “guide” to the music of the famous Thomaskantor. In personal monologues with Bach, he uncovers breathtaking moments in the cantatas, passions, and the Mass in B minor, shedding light on the often surprising connections between text, music, and biography.
At the same time, Maul reveals why Bach soon grew disillusioned with his “peculiar superiors” in Leipzig and gradually withdrew into an inner exile.
Maul’s book is a passionate declaration of love for his “composer-god,” aiming above all to inspire readers to listen anew to Bach’s works. For this work, he was awarded the Gleim Literature Prize.
After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to purchase the book and have it signed.
